Off Road Tires and Wheels

Off road tires and wheels are very important 4×4 parts of your off road adventures. If you get the wrong tires instead of the best off road tires and wheels, you could find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere with very little ability to get out. For instance, if you choose an all terrain off road tires and wheels and decide to go mudding, you won’t have enough grip and your tread could fill with mud too quick to be able to claw your way through the mud. Another issue could be if you don’t get the best off road tires and wheels, and find yourself with sub-par 4×4 parts, you could break something or get stuck in other debris, other than slick mud.

It is always important to match the type of off road tires and wheels to the material you hope to play in. The best off road tires and wheels for mud, are not necessarily the best 4×4 parts for rock climbing or use on roadway. Lets face it, not all of us can afford a different set of tires and wheels for all of the different material you want to play in. The best off road tires for your mud adventures may not be the best tires for your rock crawling or sand materials adventures. My suggestion is to shop around for a tire that fits most of what you do. If you’re heavy into mudding, go ahead and get primarily mud off road tires and wheels. Alternatively, if you do a lot of highway time or running through the woods, get a nice set of all terrain off road tires and wheels. In the end, what you get is up to you and what you can afford. Good luck and safe travels.

Off Road Tires

When choosing off road tires, it’s important to note that there are tires with different performances in mind. For off road tires, you can choose between, mud terrain tires, all terrain tires, snow tires, rock climbing tires, and paddle tires, which are used on sandy terrain. Overall, you need to decide what kind of performance you’re look for before you start shopping around.

Aside from the vehicle itself, your choice of off road tires is your most important decision to make. There are many considerations to make, aside from the terrain you plan to travel on.  You need to know the off road tires size and load it needs to carry, coarseness of the tread pattern, overall traction features, temperature variations, ability to clear media (like mud, snow, water), if it floats well, and finally the wear life of the tire. An important note to keep in mind is that the size of tire you choose depends on the weight of the vehicle and what it is to carry.

The simple fact is that there is not a single set of off road tires that can conquer every terrain. Again, when shopping for off road tires, make sure to consider what terrain you plan to attack and go from there. Determine the type of vehicle you’ll be driving, consider the weight as well when shopping to ensure that your off road tires will be able to carry the heavy load they may be placed under while playing off road.

Generally, you’ll want off road tires with a wider tread when you are going to be playing in the mud, while you may want a stickier compound for the tire when you’re planning to do some rock climbing. Overall paddle tires are essentially a slick tire with paddles formed out of the rubber that allows you to paddle your way through sand terrain. In sand the standard design of tire tread to clear past the media and reach pavement works against you. This is why the paddle essentially holds the relatively soft sand and pushes off without trying to clear its way past it.

Pro Comp Heads

Pro Comp Heads are manufactured by Procomp Electronics, a separate company from the one that makes tires, and some models are manufactured in Australia while others are speculated to be made in China. The pro comp heads are aluminum and feature stainless steel, one-piece swirl polished undercut valves, high performance valve springs (customer must specify flat tappet or roller, then Procomp Electronics makes heads to suit), chromoly retainers, ten-degree valve locks, screw studs, and guide plates. The pro comp heads are ready to install out of the box.

The Pro Comp heads are great for people who are trying to make a build on a tight budget. Pro Comp heads are ideal for both street and race applications. Obviously there are people who are suspect of budget components and their quality. But I must say that many of the reviews and what I’ve seen of the Pro Comp heads should not hold you back from trying them. As with any part, there are going to be failures. But, the customer service I’ve heard of people receiving for these components has alleviated any issues faced. Everyone I know who’s actually purchased these have been happy with the results they’ve received.

One review I read, stated that the Pro Comp heads, both cast and CNC machined, provided a dramatic performance increase over stock 5.0L heads. They said that the reason for the dramatic increase was due to the added air flow and exhaust flows created by the Pro Comp heads. They went on to say that the heads may be better suited for larger blocks rather than the likes of 302’s because of the added power and needed support for the upgraded system.

Overall, I would suggest going ahead and trying them, but of course it’s not my engine or my money, so read more reviews and articles about the Pro Comp heads and make sure you get plenty of information to make an educated decision.

Pro Comp Tires

Pro Comp tires feature a composition that enables them to be used with lower air psi without being punctured when going over sharp rocks and other objects. Pro comp tires are also known for running quiet on the highway when compared to other off-road, all terrain, or mud terrain style tires.

When selecting all terrain tires, though you’re looking for an effective tire, many people are seeking the cosmetic look and height that is popular currently. But another key feature that should be looked for when shopping for tires. You should look for a tire that is quiet on the road, otherwise known as a well mannered tire. The Pro Comp tires are definitely known for being well mannered and quiet on the highway and would be a great selection for everyday use. Additionally these tires track well compared to other all terrain tires.

Many of the Pro Comp tires come in either two-ply or three-ply. These options provide additional protection when engaged in extreme off-roading from off-road and all terrain to mudding and simple highway driving.

The Pro Comp radial Xterrain has surprised some Jeep, truck and SUV owners as a great tire for their applications. Though tire is, again, quiet on the highway. The design of the tread allows the tire to remain quiet. Both the two-ply and three-ply versions of this tire have kerf grooved lugs, full depth lug sipes, as well as alternating shoulder grip spurs.

So overall, when purchasing Pro Comp tires, you’re not just getting a good all terrain tire that will respond to the use you desire it to have.  These tires will be quiet on the highway, yet hold up to advanced rock crawling fun. These tires are also effective in mud, but can have issues when used in too “sticky” with becoming slicks. Though they may clock in extra sticky mud, you’ll be happy to know that the overall response of these tires in snowy and winter conditions are good and have actually been used by people as their off-road, all terrain tire, as well as their winter and snow tires.

Pro Comp Xterrain

Pro Comp XterrainAccording to Pro Comp, the Pro Comp Xterrain is “two tires in one”. The great thing about this tire is that it provides great traction while remaining quiet on the street. The Pro Comp Xterrain is a level above other all terrain tires.

The Pro Comp Xterrain utilizes a high void directional tread which provides this tire with its advanced performance. This tire has a Dualguard TM polyester body plies which consist of 2 ply polyester construction and a blend of dual side wall rubber which provides advanced flexibility and allows the tire to be puncture resistant while utilizing lower pressure that some use on, off road trails.

Some reviews have the Pro Comp Xterrain tire wearing quicker than expected by some users, but generally providing a good bang for the buck. While wearing may be an issue, the overall ride and tracking is better than other off road tires. Some reports have wearing being down at around the 22,000 mile mark, so keep that in mind when purchasing. Performance in rock crawling with 10-12 psi and sand with 25+ psi is good. Also, as mentioned before, these tires perform better than other off road tires on the highway, with a quieter and smoother ride.

The Pro Comp Xterrain performance in sticky mud is something to be desired as they don’t self-clean very well and will turn into virtual slicks with excessive mud. The performance in the snow may offset the results found in muddy situations. If you keep an eye out you may be able to find them with a buy 3 get 1 free sale to save a few hundred dollars.

Overall, the Pro Comp Xterrain is a good tire, but in cases of excess mudding, be careful for clogging up the tread and creating “slicks”.

Online Tire and Wheel Packages

Tire and Wheel PackagesTire and wheel packages are a great way to get the look you want without compromise. The fact is that most people purchase tires that fit their wheels and they purchase wheels that fit their vehicles. It only makes since to purchase tire and wheel packages because they allow you to choose the tire that looks right and the wheel that looks the way you want without compromising either the tire or wheel due to what is available for certain selections.

One great place that I’ve found great combos is tirerack.com. I am not an affiliate nor am I an employee of theirs. But I have purchased wheels and tires from them. This service allows you to pick and choose your wheels and tires, create a package, and actually view them on a representative graphic of your vehicle before you purchase them. They even provide information about TPMS, the electronic tire monitoring that communicates to you and your vehicle when you have low tire pressure. Additionally the shipping and handling for a set of four tires is surprisingly inexpensive. I highly suggest checking them out if you’re in the market for tire and wheel packages.

Tirerack.com is not the only place to get your tires and wheels together online, but I only bring them up because they are a service that I’ve used and am looking at as I’m in need of a set of summer tires and I’d like another new set of rims. Their selection is pretty broad allowing you to find that specific look you’re in need of.

If you’re really worried about how your vehicle will look with a certain tire and wheel packages you should consider buying locally. But I would suggest the use some of the online services to locate the exact tires and wheels that look the way you’d like them to.

Pro Comp Tires

Pro Comp TiresPro comp tires are all terrain tires designed for off-road use as well as many that are designed to remain quiet while on paved roads. The tread of pro comp tires are generally more aggressive with a wider girth between the rubber to allow it to grip a lot more dirt, mud, or other material that is needed for off-road use.

Pro comp tires are designed specifically for mud and all terrain use. These tires make your truck look tougher than you could imagine a standard radial making it look. The compounds and designs for pro comp tires make them an industry leader in the all terrain tire market.

The ability of Pro Comp tires to anticipate the market the way they have with trends, technology, and sizes, Pro Comp Tires is placed ahead of other tire manufacturers for quite some time.

Some of the designs available from Pro Comp tires is their all terrain radial. This tire provides good all terrain use and remains quiet on the highway. The all terrain tire from is a great choice for people with pickups or a SUV. The tires also feature a 50,000 mile tread-wear warranty, a great feature considering how more aggressively treaded tires generally wear quicker than other radials.

Another great design is the mud terrain radial. This tire provides enhanced traction for use in muddy and slippery environments. Though it has a more aggressive design, it remains relatively quiet on the highway and provides a comfortable ride. This tire is a great choice for trucks designed for mudding.

The Xterrain radial from Pro Comp Tires provides a great tire for those rock crawlers out there. With the less aggressive tread it has more surface area for gripping the faces and slippery surfaces of rocks while also protecting the tire from puncture of sharp rocks.

The Xtreme all terrain radial is for the person who is serious about performance in rough environments. Due to the more aggressive tread as well as the larger sections of rubber, this tire is designed for the off roader who is serious about their off-road experience. Additionally, this tire comes with a 40,000 mile tread-wear warranty.

The Xtreme mud terrain radial from Pro Comp Tires provides a smooth, quiet ride on the street while giving aggressive grip where it counts, off-road. Do the tread, these tires allow the serious mudder to grip the soft surfaces and rip their way through.
